Las Vegas - Grand Canyon

Question
Hi, my daughter is in Las Vegas just now with friends & instead of going on a coach trip to the Grand Canyon they are going to hire a car (I would rather they went on the coach). Can you tell me how long it takes to get there & is it quite easy to find? (I don't want directions) Thanks Pauline

Answer
Hi Pauline,
It takes between five and six hours to drive to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.  It's about three hours to the West Rim, and about six hours to the North Rim.  You didn't say which rim they were going to.  It is an easy drive through mostly uninhabited country.  I'm guessing that they are going to the South Rim, which is the most visited one.  In all that time and distance, there are only about three turns once you are headed south.  The things that it would be good for them to know are 1. They need to carry water and snacks with them, as there are very few places to stop on the way.  They should keep gas in the car as there are few gas stations.  If they are planning to spend the night at the Grand Canyon, they should probably check ahead..........if nothing in the Grand Canyon itself, they could stay in Tusayan, right outside the entrance to the National Park, or further away, in Williams, south of the park.
I think they'll have an easy time of it, and an experience they will remember.......it's an awesome place.
