Las Vegas - can a 20 yr old still enjoy clubs in vegas?

Expert: Tom - 10/16/2009

Question
Hey there! I'm planning on going to Vegas to celebrate my 23rd birthday with a few friends in Feb from the 11th-14th. We are all over 21 except for one, she is 20 and will be turning 21 the day we return from Vegas. Do you know if there will be any problems with her getting into clubs even though her birthday is 3 days away? If so, what other clubs/places do you recommend for us? I really want her to enjoy it. BTW I am 90% sure we will be staying at Treasure Island.

Thanks!!

Answer
Maggie,

I'm sorry I don't have better news for you, but Vegas is pretty strict about the 21-and-over policy, even for people who are only a couple days a away from turning 21. You really can't expect that you could sweet talk your way past a bouncer, and if they think you are under 30, they are going to card you.

It could also be an issue in the casino. You have to be 21 or over to even stand in the casino. You can walk through, on your way somewhere else, but you aren't even supposed to hang out and watch someone else play if you are under 21. If the casino security think you might be under 21, they will come over and ask for ID.

But, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Vegas if you are under 21. There are lots of attractions and restaurants where you can hang out under 21. One place I usually recommend for a fun dinner is Kahunaville at Treasure Island. Its a tropical themed bar/restaurant with music and juggling bartenders. They don't card at the door, so as long as your friend doesn't order a drink you can hang out there. There's also a new Asian restaurant that's laid out like a club called Khotan. They have a neat balcony overlooking the sirens show which is a fun place to hang out.

So really, and restaurant/bar with a fun atmosphere will work. You just can't expect to go to the big nightclubs. You should look into places like:
Sin City Brewing Company (Flamingo)
Hawaiian Tropic Zone (Planet Hollywood)
Hard Rock Cafe (Strip next to MGM)
Diablo's (Monte Carlo)
Dos Caminos (Palazzo)
Margaritaville (Flamingo)
House of Blues (Mandalay Bay)

If you are certain that you want to go to a nightclub, I'd recommend pushing the trip back by one week so there are no issues.

Hope that helps!

Have fun in Vegas!

Tom
