Las Vegas - Vegas in March

Expert: Laine Wightman - 10/30/2009

Question
Hi Laine
My wife and my two teenagers plan on flying to Vegas from Canada in March.
We have no interest in gambling.
Can you give us a brief description of some of the shows, other attractions, and day trips we could take?
Thanks!

Answer

 Hi Bud,
Well, first of all, March in Las Vegas is usually pretty nice, so you should enjoy the weather without slush!!!  (Been there, done that, moved away...........:)
Some of the shows that you might enjoy with your teens would be any of the following CirquedSoleil shows  "O" (my fave, at the Bellagio), "Mystere" (at Treasure Island), "Love", with a Beatles theme, at the Mirage, or "Ka", with a Martial Arts Theme.   I think that Zumanity has an adult sensual theme and would be too old for the kids, and the Chris Angel one at the Luxor has had terrible reviews since it opened. Terry Fator, the ventriloquist extraordinaire has a FABULOUS show for all ages,  The Lion King at MGM Grand should be a good musical, and if you plug your dates into the following web site, it should tell you about who is going to be in town for concerts.  Also, a new Cirque show about Elvis music is supposed to open at City Center this winter.

Depending on the age of your teens, and your thoughts on the matter, The Jersey Boys, the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is a wonderful, voted #1 in Las Vegas, musical EXCEPT that they use some really foul language in the beginning especially.  I was almost ready to leave and THEN, they started singing.  It was really great!  I think they could have left some of that language out, but then I'm not a young guy with a group of young guys, growing up in an inner city situation, so maybe it's accurate. Anyway, if you can get by that, it's really a terrific show.  I've heard that La Reve at Wynn is also wonderful, on the order of CirquedSoleil shows, but I'm still hoping to see that one.  Garth Brooks just signed a contract with Wynn, also, and will be appearing weekends.  Donnie and Marie would be a good, clean show to see, at the Flamingo.  Jubilee, at Bally's, is an old fashioned Las Vegas Review with gorgeous showgirls, feathers, etc, and they do have one performance a week that kids can go to where the girls are covered up.  The rest of the time they are topless.  Check with Bally's website to see what day that is if interested.  There are a lot of afternoon shows that are inexpensive........magicians, etc., but make sure kids are welcome.  Some still have potty mouthed performances.  There is an animal show........Gregory Popovich with all his trained rescue pets, at the Miracle Mile shops at Planet Hollywood.
Ok, that should get you started with shows.  Places to go exploring:
Hoover Dam, Ethel M's Candy Factory in Henderson (on the way to or from the Dam), Death Valley National Park is about a four hour drive from here, but to go, drive through, and return, is pretty much a day's outing.  Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area is about 30 minutes from the Strip. It is lovely country, great for hiking and picnic-ing and some days you can watch the rock climbers. Or if you ARE rock climbers, that's a good place. Bonnie Springs Ranch is also out that way and has a ghost town with gunfights etc.  Valley Of Fire State Park is about 45 miles north of the city and has wonderful rock formations, hiking, camping and petroglyphs.  Both of those places have visitors centers.  I don't know how long you are going to be here, but the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park is about 5-6 hour drive from here.  I'd advise making reservations at the park and spending the night if you want to go......it's a long, long day if you want to see anything and come back.  Mt. Charleston is about a 45 minute drive north of town, and depending on the weather, there is hiking, skiing, snowboarding and hayrides.  Mt. Charleston is at around 11,000 feet, so the climate is different from town, which is about 2600 feet in elevation.  A few hours north of town, up route 95, are some old gold towns.......Goldfield and Tonopah, which are interesting.
Kids always like shopping, so there is a BIG outlet mall about 45 minutes south of town at Primm, on the California border........there is also a good roller coaster there.  Adventuredome at Circus Circus is an indoor amusement park, including a roller coaster, the thrill rides at the top of the Stratosphere, the roller coaster at New  York, New York, the roller coaster and the virtual car racing at the Sahara.  Everyone LOVES those cars. You actually climb into what look like real race cars, and watch a big screen and race.........you can slow down and speed up, get in a crash, go to the pits, etc.  At the end, they give you a print out of what car was in what position at what speed, etc.........our teenaged granddaughter LOVES that one, and always beats her folks.  That's the Cyber Speedway, and then you can have lunch in the NASCAR cafe, also at the Sahara.
That should give you some ideas, and I hope you have a wonderful time.  If you can think of anything further that I might help you with, please write again.  Sorry this wasn't very brief, but I wanted to think of things you could all do.
