Laser Eye Surgery - high pressure

Expert: Dr.Manu C.Rajnani - 10/3/2008

Question
My husband has had 5 surgeries on his eye.  Firsly he had a cataract and vitretomy.  As a complication of that he developed a detached retina which was fixed with laser and heavy liquid. When the liquid was removed the was a residue left behind wihich caused the eye to stay inflamed. The Doctor attempted to remove the liquid and was unable to get it all.  So a few months later he wnt to surgery again and washed out the chamber in he eye an d rmoved the rest of the liquid.   Two weeks after surgery my husband become violently ill and he pain in his eye was very intense.  We urgently attend the surgery and fou nd his pressure to be 61.  A needle was inserted to lwwer pressure and he is taking Diamox tablets twice a day withCombigan drops. The pressure is now 23 but he is still using steroid drops and we are wondering if this could be raising the pressure as he has been on them for about 8 weeks now.??  He has now been referred to another Specalist who is more trained in Gloucoma.  His eye has had so much surgery we wonder whether it could take any more.  What is your opinion.  Would it be possible tha the pressure may drop after stoping the steroid

Answer
Dear MARYANNE,
Thanks for asking such elaborate and interesting question

Probably there was so much inflammation that your eye specialist had to prescribe steroid drops but there are non steroidal anti inflammatory drops also available which can help reduce the inflammation so the main important thing here is to one reduce the inflammation and also keep the intraocular pressure under check and the glaucoma specialist will be the best person to guide you as to what drops are suitable after complete examination please dont stop drops suddenly also you should have total faith in your consultant and you will always do well

If you any further questions please revert back to me
Thanking you
