Laser Eye Surgery - Regarding LASIK surgery - flap with microkeratome or laser?
Expert: Dr. Burjor P. Banaji - 2/10/2008
Question I am a medical student doing residency in pediatrics. One of my fellow residents recommended your name for LASIK. I had a few concerns about the same:
1. Should I get the regular one with flap being raised by a microkeratome or the one with laser -epilasik?
2. Where all in India is epilasik available?
3. What is the complication rate after LASIK?
4. Are there any studies documenting long term effects of LASIK?
5. Asians generally have thinner corneas. Is that fact taken under consideration during surgery and are there any cases with corneal rupture secondary to LASIK?
6.My power is -4.5 and -4.75 and 0.5 cylindrical in both eyes. I am using glasses since last 16 years and I am 29 years old. Am I a good candidate for LASIK or LASEK?
Thanking you in anticipation.
Regards
Madhulika
Answer TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS -
1)GET IT DONE BY A SURGEON WHO IS INTIMATELY FAMILIAR WITH WHATEVER PROCEDURE HE IS USING . AT PRESENT NO ONE IN INDIA HAS MORE THAN A FEW MONTHS EXPERIENCE WITH A FEMTOSECOND LASER
2) SEVERAL SURGEONS OFFER THIS - THOUGH THE ADVANTAGE OVER PRK IS QUESTIONABLE
3)the american academy of ophthalmology has some information on this - but there has been no really long term study on lasik because most patients have been lost to follow up
4) Asians DO NOT have thinner corneas. This is a fallacy
5) Impossible to say till your eyes have been examined.
