Laser Eye Surgery - Eye surgery

Expert: Dr.Manu C.Rajnani - 3/1/2008

Question
My mother is  diabetic, living in Mexico.  She is losing her vision in both eyes. A doctor told her that there is not much they can do for her, but that they can do some kind of laser surgery to stop her from going completely blind.  Is this her only option or is there something better to pursue?

Answer
Dear Rogelio
Thanking you for the question,
YES diabetes causes damage to the retina in a way that it causes minute bleeds on retina because diabetes causes hypoxia or less oxygenation of the tissues causing new bloos vessels to develop to supply oxygen but these new bloss vessels are fragile and they break easily causing bleeding so to stop the bleeding one has to do laser it is like doing welding to stop leakage froma pipeline , yes laser helps to certain extent depending on damage already caused so please consult a retinal surgeon immediately and give her treatment as soon as possible before permanant and irreversibel damage occurs
thanking you
Dr.Manu C.Rajnani
