I am 31 years old and I had myopia or near-sightedness since I was 14 years old. When I was 17 years old, I went to see the eyes doctor for the first time. He prescribed some glasses for me at that time, and he told me that I don’t have to use my glasses for reading or for using the computer. The doctor said “you can use your glasses only for driving and for looking at the blackboard when you are in a classroom”.
Ten years later when I was 27 years old, I saw a different eastern doctor. After he examined my eyes, he wrote for me more powerful lenses for glasses, and his prescription was this:
OD -3.25 + 50 times 015
OS -3.00 + 25 times 180
But I never bought the new prescription, and I kept using the old glasses. When I was 29 I went to an American doctor to see if I am a good candidate for Laser surgery, and after he checked my eyes he said that was ok for me to do the laser to correct my vision. Since that time until now I was busy with many other things, and I neither bought for me new glasses nor did the laser surgery, so I just kept using my old glasses for driving and for looking at the far projection board only. I never used them for anything else, and I hate using contact lenses because they irritate me.
At the company where I work, I have some Indian friends, who have also myopia, but they use their glasses all the time for reading, driving or all other activities while their eye vision is a lot better than mine without glasses. I am surprised that their eyes are much more powerful than my eyes, and their near-sightedness is very mild comparing to mine, or not as sever as mine; however, they been advised to wear glasses 90 to 100 % of the time. They only see Indian doctors, and they have been told to use glasses all the time for almost all activities. My Indian friends are urging me to do the same thing and keep using my glasses all the time; otherwise I will suffer more deteriorated vision problems, according to their frequent warnings to me.
I need you to let me know please what I should do. Should I have to keep using my glasses 90 % of the time or I can just keep using them for driving only? Will my myopia get worse if I don’t use glasses all the time? What do you think about the laser correction? Even though I was a good candidate for laser surgery, I am still skeptical about it and I don’t want to have any bad side effects from Laser. I like to have normal sight through laser, but in the same time I don’t want to damage my eyes through misusing glasses and laser.
Thanks for your help and answer
Answer you are not damaging your eyes by not using your glasses. However I fail to understand why you have never obtained your correct prescription and are continuing to use spectacles which are underpowered.
Please go to an optician and get your prescription checked and use your glasses during all waking hours. You will see much better and thus also feel much better
