Laser Eye Surgery - Laser eye surgery

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 6/16/2008

Question
Is it possible for me to get laser surgery done to remove my eye glasses? I use glasses for reading and far vision. My age is 47.

Answer
Dear Neelam,

This firstly needs to be clarified if the glasses are for near work or far or both. After 40 years of age, every eye starts aging as well and requires 'plus' number for reading. Sometimes, if you are using 'minus' numbers for far work, this plus requirement comes in later. This is called Presbyopia.

About Presbyopia and LASIK

These + reading numbers start about 40 years of age, on an average from requiring about
+ 1.00 and increasing upto +3.00 with aging upto age 60 years.
This cannot be prevented as it is due to age related changes in the lens and eye muscles. It is called 'Presbyopia'.

There is no permanent treatment by laser for this, although some doctors advertise 'presbyopic LASIK' or 'CK', which is a laser treatment needing to be repeated every 1 or 1.5 years, not permanent, involves repeated treatment on a delicate tissue like cornea and is still in its infancy, hence not advocated by me.

We could help you for distant numbers by correcting them off completely which would then leave you with reading numbers alone.

The distant correction is always permanent, unless something changes within your eyes due to age as we see due to various functions of different parts of our visual pathway.

Option of Multifocal Implants

There is one way to avoid reading numbers and also correct myopia (minus numbers for distance), which is using Multifocal Implants (wavefront lenses), which may be a good option considering your  age. This is because if you do LASIK , there is a chance that you may need a cataract surgery in the future, and if that happens very soon (as there is no way of telling or predicting if and when you will get a cataract), then whatever spent on LASIK would be a waste. In multifocal implants, the natural lens of your eye is replaced, and hence there is no chance of any cataract in the future.

Hence it is only a detailed eye examination + understanding what kind of work you do (whether more distant related or computers etc, whether you drive a lot at night etc), that we help you make an informed decision regarding the most suitable treatment for you.

Please find the details of the above in the website www.laservision-eyesurgery.com
