Question QUESTION: Please do not reply to the other email I sent u because it has the wrong email address. Please reply to thisw one.
Hello,
Do you think it is a good idea to just have 1 eye corrected for far distance (since I was told one eye is the dominant one in seeing far things)? Also with doing laser eye surgery for far distance will close object be blured? Thank you.
Rish
ANSWER: Dear Rish,
What you ask is called 'Monovision'. This is offered to patients who have numbers for both far and near and do not want to use reading glasses and distant numbers as well. This is not done to patients who have only distant numbers and are below 40 years of age
About Presbyopia and LASIK
At the age of 40 years, everyone starts having change in his or her optics due to an age related phenomenon. After 40 years, we all need to use reading glasses. In older people who have not had LASIK done and still need to use numbers for distant work, these are then used as 'Bi focals' or 'verifocals'. Reading glasses are an age related issue and no one is exempt from it. So, if you do not have LASIK done, then yes, you will need two glasses, one for far and one for near work.
These + reading numbers start about 40 years of age, on an average from requiring about
+ 1.00 and increasing upto +3.00 with aging upto age 60 years.
This cannot be prevented as it is due to age related changes in the lens and eye muscles.
‘Monovision’ is an option for those using contact lenses, wherein we correct myopia completely for one eye and leave behind a minor number in the other. It sounds odd, but over time one learns to read the distance with the eye good for far vision and reads near for comfortable print by the eye left behind with a small number. This is accepted by most who wear contact lenses where their optician/ optometrist has given them this monovision trial in their lenses, ie. one lens has the actual number so you read clearly with this and the other lens is slightly under corrected so you read near with this. Now, when one wants to do extensive near reading it may be a strain. So, we recommend them to use near glasses as per what is required for their age when they are doing near work for a long time.
When we have performed monovision for people who have never undergone the monovision trial, we have found that they are neither happy for far, nor happy for near.
My suggestion to you is to see the optician and get contact lenses which will give you a trial and see how you feel with this for about 2-3 weeks. This will give you an idea of what your vision will be like after LASIK with monovision correction before opting for it. However, even with monovision, if you are driving, especially at night, you may need glasses for crisp vision. Hence, depending on your lifestyle, it sometimes works best to completely correct the distance and then to use reading glasses for near.

QUESTION: Thanks for providing such a detailed answer. Now I am curious does getting laser eye surgery make it be difficult to read close-up things even under 30 years old? (since the eye is adjusted for far distance) Thank you.
Answer Dear Rish,
No. The laser does not cause any reading issues under 30 years of age. Under 30 years of age your eye muscles are strong enough to do work for near but as you age after 40 years, this muscle becomes weak and requires 'plus' reading numbers.
Under 30 years, your numbers which you are probably using are for only distant work and this if in 'minus' is Myopia which is permanently corrected.
