Laser Eye Surgery - Cataract surgery

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 7/27/2008

Question
Three months ago I had lens implant cataract surgery.  I did NOT have cataracts but have narrow angles and it was recommended to me that I have the IOL surgery to stop the risk of having a narrow angle glaucoma attack.  The surgery went well - but one week after, at my exam it was found that I had to have YAG laser for cloudiness in the left eye.  My Eye doc told me to wait 3 months to have the YAG - which I did and had it done this last Monday.  Before he did the IOL replacement I requested that he put near distance lenses in both eyes as I am an artist and do a lot of close work and I would be happy to get glasses for distance.  However, on this past Monday when I went for the laser he informed me that he had placed a "near" lens in my left eye and a "distance" lens in my right eye.  Since having the YAG laser treatment I now cannot focus on near or distance very well, whereas before the laser I could read and do close work with no problems (distance was blurry).  Does this make sense?  For three months the lens in my right eye was doing all the work and could see "near" clearly whilst my left eye was cloudy with secondary cataract and not doing much work at all??  Now both eyes are battling to focus......  Could you please explain.  At this time I am considering having the distance lens in my right eye replaced with a near lens (as I originally requested) - is this possible??  Can IOL replacement surgery be repeated and what are the outcomes and risks associated therewith.
Thank for your time, it is appreciated.

Answer
Dear Avril,

Replacing the implant is a more tedious surgery which may still not give you the desired results,

It may help to speak to your doctor to consider having LASIK where the far eye can be made myopic with LASIK.

Hope this helps,
Sorry for the delay in reply...had some technical issues
