QUESTION: What is the full form of 'Phaco'?
What is the difference between the microincision cataract surgery & Phaco.
Answer Dear Gourab,
Phaco is short for Phacoemulsification cataract surgery, where the cataract is removed using Ultrasound and 'sucked' out through a very small incision, which does not require stitches.
Most modern cataract surgeries are now done in this manner.
The implant to be used after removing the 'cataract' is also a 'foldable' implant.
Earlier this incision used to be 6 mm, then 3 millimeters and now a very tiny incision of 2 mm called Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS).
We discuss in detail the needs, lifestyle and visual demands of the patient alongside the preoperative assessment which greatly helps us plan which procedure/implant is most suitable for their needs and expectations. The visual potential of the patient can be realized in many different ways, and when looked at in this context very few cataract procedures are the same.
If you need more information on the same, please visit www.shroffeye.org
Also, if in Mumbai, we would be happy to see the patient who needs the cataract surgery and advise what is best depending on his/her lifestyle and eye condition.
