Laser Eye Surgery - Eye condition called Astigmatism, or Stigmatism

Expert: Dr Anand Shroff, MD, FICS - 4/14/2007

Question
Hi My son who is thirty years old has been told that he has an illness called Stigmatism of his left pupil. He has also been told this is when the pupil (the coloured bit) englarges and change shape. could you tell me if Stigmatism is the right word and what sort of treatment can he have for this. Also, what causes this sort of eye disorder. he has been wearing glasses since the age of twenty, when he went to Thialand as a child he got photophobia as he dad was too mean to buy him a pair of sunglasses. Please understand that I wasnt there at the time as I am divorced, and I was horrified on his return that he had let this happen to our son. Please can you advise as to what treatment he needs, as this is more importantly very bad because he is a professional musician. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours Liz

Answer
Dear Liz,

The medical information given to you is either incorrect or you have misuynderstood the same.

Astigmatism means a cylindrical power in your eye. This simply means the need for glasses or contact lenses to correct the vision, which may be less depending on the numbers he has in that eye. The astigmatism does not develop as an acute eye problem, nor is it an illness. It is an refractive error, simply meaning the need to use spectacles or glasses (contact if desired). All he needs is a good optometris whoi can help him with the same depending on his lifestyle and needs. So, my suggestion is to visit one in the near future. There is no need to panic or worry because now with LASIK or laser eye correction (you can read about the same on www.lasikindia.in)can permanently treat this condition.

Regards,
Dr Shroff
