Latin - Venustas immortalis

Expert: Maria - 10/3/2008

Question
Does venustas immortalis mean eternal beauty, as in one who possesses eternal beauty? If not, could you help me find a translation for that?
Thanks,
Merle

Answer
Hello,

The Latin feminine noun VENUSTAS ( nominative case, 3rd.declension) means “attractiveness”, “ charm”, “grace”,  “loveliness” as well as “ beauty” which however can be translated also as PULCHRITUDO (nominative case, 3rd.declension) when related to physical beauty or bodily perfection rather than to spiritual beauty.

As for the adjective IMMORTALIS (nominative feminine agreed with VENUSTAS), it means “eternal”, “immortal”, “timeless” and thus it is correct, though there are other Latin adjectives just meaning “eternal”, i.e. AETERNUS, SEMPITERNUS (in the nominative masculine).

In short VENUSTAS IMMORTALIS, that is “eternal beauty”, as in one who possesses eternal beauty, is correct as well as VENUSTAS AETERNA or VENUSTAS SEMPITERNA where the adjectives AETERNA/ SEMPITERNA are in the nominative feminine agreed with VENUSTAS.

Anyway, if you want to mean ““eternal beauty” as in one who possesses eternal spiritual grace/ charm, you should say  GRATIA AETERNA as well as SEMPITERNA GRATIA or GRATIA IMMORTALIS.

Hope this can be helpful to you.
Best regards,
Maria
