Latin - Family Crest Translation

Expert: Maria - 6/16/2008

Question
Hi Maria, My sister is designing a family crest and needed a translation, if possible could you please translate "Lord watch over my family", i appreciate you taking the time to read this question.

Answer
Hello,

Here’s  the translation of "Lord, watch over my family":

-“Domine, meam quaeso custodi familiam”.

Hope this can be helpful to you and your sister.

All the best,
Maria
_____________________________________________________
Note that:

-Lord = DOMINE (vocative of DOMINUS, 2nd.declension)

-watch over = CUSTODI (imperative, 2nd.person singular, of  CUSTODIO)

-my = MEAM (accusative feminine of MEUS, agreed with FAMILIAM)

-family = FAMILIAM ( direct object in the accusative of FAMILIA, 1st.declension)

Please note that in Latin I‘ve added the interjection QUAESO as a polite expression of entreaty meaning ‘I beseech you', ‘I pray', ‘please’.

As you can see, Latin word order can be different from English.
