Question
HI. Thank u for doing this free service btw.
I have been on a hunt to find some definitive answer to the cultural origins of a an older male name that is Latin-based. I believe it is either Italian or Spanish but I'm hoping as I see you are an Italian in Italy yourself, that you may be the person to answer this very important quandary for me. Either by your own expertise or maybe with help from an older male family member or colleague.
I'm unsure of the exact spelling, unfortunately sorry, but it is Mondes or Mundees or Mundies. All I have to go in is the verbal word. I've never seen it written. I am spelling it in ways it seems to be pronounced. (Mun-dees). But cud also be pronounced Mondays, (I think this is just the American English way of pronunciation tho! Lol), I guess. My mother is unsure. It is the name of my birth father and this is all I've ever had to go on so I figured I'd try you. ;-)
Grazie in advance.

Answer
Hello,

in Latin there is  the word “mundus” that can be either a masculine adjective meaning “clean”, “nice”, “ordered “ or a noun meaning “the universe”, “ the world”.

Just from the Latin term “mundus” derive some Italian surnames such as “Mundo” which can be found in  116 Italian towns, “Mundi” (in 15 towns) “Mondo” (in 165 towns ), “Mondi” ( in 68 towns), and “Mondia” ( in 7 towns).

So, I think that "Mundo", "Mundi, “Mondo”, “Mondi” and “Mondia” could correspond to the surnames that you mention, i.e. Mondes or Mundees or Mundies , Mondays, whose pronunciation is just an incorrect spelling of “Mundo”, “Mundi”, “Ṃndo”, “Ṃndi” and  “Mond́a”, if Mondes or Mundees, Mundies, Mondays are surnames.

If on the contrary you are referring to a male first name, I have to tell you that in Latin as well as in Italian there is no given name that can correspond to Mondes or Mundees, Mundies, Mondays.

Finally, as for the correct pronunciation of "Mundo", "Mundi, “Mondo”, “Mondi” and “Mondia” please note that:

“MUNDO” must be pronounced correctly as follows:

-“MUN“ like “moon”. The accent stands on this U .
-DO like the DOO in “door”
In short: ṃ̣nd-oo

“MUNDI” must be pronounced correctly as follows:

-“MUN“ like “moon”. The accent stands on the U (=OO) .
-D like the D in “door”
-I like the EE in “green”.
In short: ṃ̣nd-ee

"MONDO" must be pronounced correctly as follows:

-“MOND“ like “mond-” in “monday” . The accent stands on this O.
-O like the OO in “door”
In short: ṃnd-oo

“MONDI” must be pronounced correctly as follows:

- MOND like “mond” in “monday”. The accent stands on the O.
-I like the EE in “green”.
In short: ṃnd-ee

“MONDIA” must be pronounced correctly as follows:

-“MOND“ like “mond-” in “monday”
-I like EE in “green”. The accent stands on the I .
-A like the A in “father”
In short: mond-èè-a

Hope this can be helpful to you.

Best regards,

Maria
