Latino Culture - US Passport for child who will be born in US to Colombian parents

Expert: E. S. - 8/1/2007

Question
Hi. My child will be born in South Carolina in October and I plan to leave the US in December, going back to my home country, Colombia. I want to find out how to get his birth certificate and passport as soon as possible. Also, can he leave the USA without his US passport (and maybe I can receive it by mail at a later date in Colombia - if it doesn't arrive before we have to leave). I will register him with the Colombian embassy so he will have a Colombian passport - Colombia allows dual citizenship - but I really want him to have US citizenship as well. Thanks!

Answer
Passport law have change recently. One cannot leave the countryBirth certificates and passports are all relevent on the quickness of the agency that they come from.  Both, birth cert. and passport can take up to two months to recieve.  As far as the passport, one can pay for an expedited passport which would decrease the waiting time by a few weeks.  You can go to the post office to get questions answered for the passport. The passport is dependant on the birth certificate. you can't get the passport until you get the certificate. I also recommend that you and your child get a check up by the doctor before you fly. Being a young child and you just giving birth, both of you can get sick very easily. Mucha suerte, que dios les bendiga.
