Question
Hi,
I was born in the USA. My dad and brother were born in Argentina and my mom was born in Peru. I have been going to both countries since i was born. twice a year. Can i say im from Peru and Argentina?

Answer
It is not possible to be from two places. You're either from Peru or from Argentina. But technically, you're from the USA. Cultural identity is not dependant on country of birth. Cultural identity is dependant on your upbringing and which culture you identify with. For example, Guatemalan infants that have been adopted by white American parents, will most likely loose their Guatemalan identity and gain an American one. This loss of identity is done by loss in language, loss in cultural tradition, loss in Guatemalan social contact. ect. Unless the American family that adopted this child lives a 100% Guatemalan lifestyle it can be said that the Guatemalan identity will be lost in that child. But when grown that child can say they are from Guatemala, but has an American identity. I use American loosely in order to pertain to the USA.
As for you, you have been raised by parent of two different cultures. Argentina having more of a European influence and Peru having more of an indigenous influence. Your identity is dependent on you and what you feel. You can tell people that you are Peruvian/Argentine, but if you tell someone that you are from Peru and Argentina, be ready to get some confused faces. In general you can always say you're Latino.  I hope this helps.
