Subject: first names in latin america

Question
why are slavic first names so common in latin america? E.G., Alex Rodriguez.

Answer
Actually Alex is short for Alexander, which derives from Greece. Alex Rodriguez is Dominican-American, if he were to be born in the Dominican Republic, his name would have been Alejandro, which is a spanish translation of Alexander. If you know your european history, you know that the great empires such as the Greeks and Roman all had lands in the slavic territories. As with any form of colonization traditions and cultures are blended, shared and moved from one area to another. The Romans had more influence in this than the greeks. I'm not denying that there are slavic derived names in Latin America brought by the european immigrants, but I do not believe that are are common when compared to Greek or Latin derived names. Most of Latin America influence comes from Spain, which has had a great Latin influence as well as Arabic.
