About Hannah
Expertise
I can answer questions concerning standard doctrines, scriptures, curiousities, Mormon culture and society. I will not respond to debates. I'm sorry, but there are some things that I simply will not answer, not because I don't want to, but there are some things that the LDS people do not discuss casually--it's only talked about within the temple. Though I am a member, I do not believe that anyone could convert anyone to a religion over something as impersonal as the internet. So I won't even try to.

Experience
I have been a member of the LDS church for 8 years. Though I'm still a young person, I can answer most things about the church.

Latter-day Saints - LDS dating

Expert: Hannah - 5/6/2008

Question
My name is Kyndra, I am a 17 year old girl about to turn 18 and my Boyfriend and I are haveing difficulties with his parents. Jonathan(Boyfriend) is of the LDS Faith and we have been dating for quite awhile. And his parents have decided that they don't want us to date anymore. I am lost for an excuse to why they would say this. I have never said anything offensive, I respect Jonathans values and never push him. They say its for his own good and they feel he is going against the Church and God by dating outside the Church. I don't want to let him go. I care deeply for him and he has told me he cares deeply for me. But if my wanting to be with him causes grief within his family, I can't stand that. So I guess what I am trying to ask is. Is this a lost cause?

Answer
I guess my answer would be, "No."  I don't know the whole circumstances, but there isn't an exact reason why the members avoid dating outside of the church.  I don't know if I'd call it "going against God," but LDS members are encouraged to date within the faith. And many members say that every member needs a partner who doesn't just respect their values, but shares them.  Friendships, you can just respect, but there comes a time in peoples' lives (such as when you leave highschool) when you have to start thinking about who you're going to spend the rest of your life with, and perhaps his parents are this type of people.  Perhaps they're afraid that you will discourage him from serving a mission when he turns nineteen. There isn't an exact reason.  You can try to figure out what is best for him and his family, and make a decision.  I know this sounds awkward, but I feel impressed to say it, but you can pray.  I don't even know if you believe in God, but you don't have to be a Mormon, or a Christian or even religious at all for God to listen. I think that you can ask him this question, and I think that he will guide you, if you open yourself to Him.  Sorry if that's an awkward answer.
