AboutMichael Kelley Expertise For a different viewpoint on Mormonism for your questions, try me. I am a staunch believer in the Book of Mormon and belong to another church (the Church of Christ)that is set up identically to the Biblical church. If there are things about traditional Mormonism that trouble you or you have questions about, just ask and you might find the answers from the Book of Mormon to be quite surprising. I have been studying the scriptures diligently for 16 years under the school of hard knocks... I may not have all of the answers but will sure go find them if I don`t. I`m strongest on Biblical and Book of Mormon doctrines, and am also somewhat familiar with Mormon history and archaeology.
Question do you really believe that African/African Americans are cursed..??
Answer Hi Kayla,
I will be happy to answer your question. Please note I am ex-LDS and belong to the Church of Christ that believes in the Book of Mormon. I apologize for not answering sooner, I had been out of town for a week.
I do not believe Africans or African/Americans are cursed. There is no scripture in either the Bible or Book of Mormon that teaches anything about Africans being cursed. The Book of Mormon teaches all are equal in God's eyes. There are past teachings in the LDS Utah faction (commonly known as Mormons) that did teach this, but I do not think they teach this anymore and I don't believe many of there members believe this way today. Brigham Young was certainly a racist and even taught those caught in inter-racial relationships should be put to death on the spot. He felt no Negro should ever marry a white person, or hold a priesthood or political office. I feel that belief is OUTRAGEOUS. Shucks I am white but was brought to Jesus in an all African church, I was the only white guy in there. The Church of Christ, all the way back to it's origin in 1830 has NEVER taught nor believed this evil doctrine that Brigham Young has taught (over the pulpit no less). This and many other reasons is why I left the Utah Mormons and joined another church that actually practices the Bible and Book of Mormon. The fastest growing area for the Church of Christ is in Africa.
On the other hand, God does curse various nations or races... not based on their color, but because of their wickedness. The Jews were cursed and punished many times because of their wickedness. In the Book of Mormon a group of people were cursed because of their wickedness... sometimes it was the darker skinned people (probably brown.. not black) and sometimes it was the fair skinned (white) people that were cursed... only because of their wickedness. There is even an account in the Book of Mormon where the white skinned people were slaves to the dark skinned peoples... and that because of their iniquity. Were Africans cursed because of their iniquity and brought into slavery by the early Americans? I really cannot say... There are no scriptures that I know of that teach this. Sometimes innocent people suffer unjustly, and sometimes guilty people suffer justly. One thing I am sure of.... God is not a respector of persons and His grace is given to all regardless of race, color or gender.
