About Gene Black
Expertise
I can answer questions related to LDS beliefs and history as well as doctrinal questions pertaining to the standard works (Bible, Book of Mormon, etc.) I believe strongly in personal revelation and hope that all answers I provide will be carefully considered, and prayed about before being accepted.

Experience
I've been a member of the LDS Church all of my life, have served a mission for the Church, have been sealed to my wife in the Washington, DC temple, and enjoy reading books on LDS history and the teachings of the prophets.

Organizations
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Education/Credentials
A love for people and a strong desire to seek after the word of God. I try hard to follow the command "Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men."

Latter-day Saints - 3 degrees of glory

Expert: Gene Black - 10/7/2009

Question
What are the 3 levels of Celestial glory? I need data for
for my Relief Society lesson. Thank you

Answer
That hasn't been revealed. There are certain things we know, and some things that could be easily speculated, but speculation isn't want you want for your lesson.

What we do know:

1. The ordinances of the gospel are not intended nor necessary for the Telestial and Terrestrial kingdoms. The ordinances of the Gospel and the Gospel itself is only intended to help people reach the Celestial kingdom.

2. At least one of the ordinances of the Gospel, that of Celestial marriage - being sealed to a spouse in the temple - is required for the highest degree of the Celestial kingdom.

3. Only in the highest degree of the Celestial kingdom do we truly become like God and obtain exaltation and continuation of "lives or "seed".

4. Those who live the other laws of God but fail to obey the law of celestial marriage (willfully - those who have not had the opportunity in this life but would have had it presented itself will have an opportunity to choose to live this law at some point in the future) will obtain the Celestial kingdom but fall short of the highest degree of glory within the Celestial kingdom and will become "ministering angles" to God.

The source material you'll want here is D&C 131:1-4 and the first part of D&C 132. Also, the prophet Joseph Fielding Smith provides some insight into this in "Doctrines of Salvation Vol. II" in chapter 2. I'm sure plenty of other quotations from Prophets and Apostles exist on this as well.

I'm sorry I can't provide you a more complete answer than that, but a complete answer to that question has never been revealed to the church as a whole as far as I'm aware.

Hope this helps.

Gene
