About Hannah
Expertise
I can answer questions concerning standard doctrines, scriptures, curiousities, Mormon culture and society. I will not respond to debates. I'm sorry, but there are some things that I simply will not answer, not because I don't want to, but there are some things that the LDS people do not discuss casually--it's only talked about within the temple. Though I am a member, I do not believe that anyone could convert anyone to a religion over something as impersonal as the internet. So I won't even try to.

Experience
I was born and raised into an LDS family and baptized at age eight. Though I'm still a young person, I can answer most things about the church. I graduated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Seminary of Religion and currently attend Brigham Young University, where all students study Latter-day Saint religion as well as their chosen field.

Question
i am wondering how the Modern LDS church feels about the roles that women
play both in regards to the church and the family, as well as, in regards to their
equality involving secular life.

Answer
The LDS Church believes (and has ALWAYS believed) that women are separate but equal.  Just as we believe that there are jobs specific to men, there are jobs specific to women. Women cannot hold the priesthood, and never have been able to. That is because they have a different job.  For example, though women cannot hold priesthood positions (and thus cannot be bishops, cannot be stake presidents, cannot be apostles or the prophet), men cannot hold the following:

Branch, Ward, Stake or General primary presidency (Primary is the organization for the children of the church. Branch, ward, stake and general are different area divisions.  General is over the entire church).

Branch, ward, stake or general Young Women's presidency (Young Women is an organization for teenage girls)

branch, ward, stake or general Relief Society presidency (an organization for women in general)

General Young Women's Board

Class Presidencies and advisors within Young Women's

Others too. Also, in primary, men can only be class teachers if they are groups of two or more or if they are with their wives (a new rule created in order to cover the church's legal buns after the whole Catholic priest molestation thing).

Women can be full-time missionaries just like men can.

It is believed in the church that women have the gorgeous, divine and glorious ability to bear children, nurture children and be a help-meat for men.  Women are NOT subservient to men (never have been since our founding). Marriage is an equality relationship and a man should NEVER abuse his spouse, not even emotionally (which is what it would be if he were to treat her as lesser).

Women are encouraged to stay at home with their children if at all possible, but we are not directly adverse to working women, and we would never judge a woman for doing so.  It's about acceptance in that aspect.
