Latter-day Saints - Open discussion in church...heaven forbid!

Question
I am a 4th generation mormon.  Both sets of great grandparents were polygamists.  It seems to me that the Mormon church does not embraces it's history and makes you feel like an outsider if you raise questions.  They seem to avoid discussion on any controversial events and changes in doctrine such as polygamy, blacks and the priesthood, the Mormon massacre, the early pioneers not adhering to the word of wisdom, changes with the temple ceremony. Also, the claim that they are the only true church...I cannot accept that everyone else is wrong.  I believe there are many truths and good in all religions.  I would have much more respect and understanding if members were encouraged to openly discuss such questions.  You just don't dare ask any questions or bring up controversy in church.  How do you see it?  Your thoughts from a church historical point of view?

Answer
Hello. Thank-you for your question and comments. My Master's thesis consists of scholarly works regarding the LDS Church and their ideas towards free speech within their own Church. You are quite right - their leadership does not take too kindly the skeletons in their closet or discussing controversial topics. I wish I could say you were wrong - because I think it would be better for the LDS Church if they were more open with discussing things - however, I know in my heart that you are right on the money. I guess that it is a church's prerogative to do whatever they want - they don't have to please everyone. Thanks for your question.
