About Michael Kelley
Expertise
For a different viewpoint on Mormonism for your questions, try me. I am a staunch believer in the Book of Mormon and belong to another church (the Church of Christ)that is set up identically to the Biblical church. If there are things about traditional Mormonism that trouble you or you have questions about, just ask and you might find the answers from the Book of Mormon to be quite surprising. I have been studying the scriptures diligently for 16 years under the school of hard knocks... I may not have all of the answers but will sure go find them if I don`t. I`m strongest on Biblical and Book of Mormon doctrines, and am also somewhat familiar with Mormon history and archaeology.

Latter-day Saints - birth control

Expert: Michael Kelley - 1/17/2007

Question
What is the Mormon position on birth control?  I know you guys are generally opposed to it, but are there ever exceptions where contraception may be acceptable?

Answer
Hi Lisa,
I will be happy to answer your questions. Please note I am ex-LDS and belong to the original Church of Christ that believes in the Book of Mormon.

I am not sure what the Utah Mormons believe on the subject. I believe they lean towards large families because of their belief in Celestial Marriage and premortal existence wherein it is better to have more children so that these yet to be born souls will be raised in "righteous" families. There are no scriptural references in the Bible, Book of Mormon, or the LDS Doctrine and Covenants on the subject. Their beliefs about Celestial Marriage and premortal existence is not supported by either the Bible or Book of Mormon and is even taught against in those scriptures.

In my church (another Restoration church that believes in the Book of Mormon) we have no official stand on the subject. We do promote family planning so that a family does not have too many children and are faced with too many pressures that could lead to divorce. One item we do officially oppose strongly is any form of abortion (save when the mother's life is genuinely in danger). Any form of contraception other than abortion or an abortion pill is not condemned and even encouraged to promote more stable families.

I hope this helps answer your questions, feel free to ask others if you like.

God Bless,
Mike
