Question can you tell me what the typical salary for an svu detective is and can you tell me if the salary increase with years of experience?
Answer Hi there!
This is a little out of my area of expertise, as I can answer questions about the show -- not necessarily the real-life counterpart.
However, this is what I found:
# 1 in 6 uniformed members of the NYPD are Detectives. A Detective’s (3rd Grade) average earning is $100,000* (Promotion to Detective is not based on a promotional exam, it’s based on merit)
# 1 in 7 uniformed members of the NYPD are Sergeants. A Sergeant’s average earning is $100,000*
# 1 in 20 uniformed members of the NYPD are Lieutenants. A Lieutenant’s average earning is $122,000*
I think it's safe to say that an SVU detective might make a bit more money than the other departments, due to it being a more stressful position, but I don't have any verification on that.
