Law & Order - Fake Trial

Expert: Kitt Montague - 3/19/2008

Question
I'm interested in one episode in particular. I believe it is Season 16, Episode 22, Invaders, but correct me if I'm wrong. Jack McCoy uses a 'fake trial' to force a confession out of a suspect, or something to that effect. I am looking for a real-life example of this 'fake trial' deal, in modern courtrooms.  I'm wondering if Jack mentioned another case in this episode or if, perhaps, this portion of Invaders was based off of a real event. I can't find a script or video anywhere, so I am looking for expert help.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi there!

OK, so there's semi-good news and then another suggestion that I have for you. First of all, with a show that has over 400 episodes, the particulars of any one are usually fairly hazy. (Though I'm best with the first 111 episodes, due to a Chris Noth fascination.) In any case, while I remember "Invasion" and the faux case, I don't know much beyond that. I believe Jack did cite a precedent, but I don't know whether it was one of his own cases or not. It is true that on the show they usually use real-life cases when citing precdents, but my detail memory is not sufficient to tell you more.

That said, you might want to join the apocrypha mailing list for the shows. I co-run it, but we have a great group of fans on the list, many of whom have shows on tape. We also publish a weekly listing of all of the L&O shows upcoming, so there's a chance it will simply rerun in the near future.

If you're interested in that option, I'd try here:

Otherwise, I'm afraid that's all I can offer. Hope it helps a bit!
