Law & Order - L&O SVU- ADA Replacement of Alex Cabot to Casey Novak

Expert: Kitt Montague - 3/16/2008

Question
I do recall ADA Cabot being in danger in one of the episode and she had to go
into witness protection program. She returned for testimony and that was that.
Was she killed (I can't recall) but why did she leave the show as an actor? I
tolerate Novak but really miss Cabot. She was sharp.

Answer
Alex Cabot wasn't killed; she got shot at the end of "Loss," but survived her injuries and was shown heading into the witness protection program. Only Benson and Stabler were permitted to see her alive before the feds took her in. But then she came back in "Ghost" to serve as a witness against the man who tried to kill her. Then she went back into witness protection.

But THEN, on the short-lived "Conviction" she turned up yet again, with no explanation as to why she was not only out of witness protection but back as a Bureau Chief. I believe they were going to eventually deal with this issue, but the show got canceled before it ever was.

She left the show, as many young actors and actresses do, for a combination of reasons that are usually boiled into: Looking for bigger and better opportunities and because the schedule can be quite grueling on a L&O set, which barely finishes shooting one episode before the next one's cameras start rolling. I don't recall her stating unequivocally what her reasons for going were, but that's how I understood it at the time. She certainly wasn't fired, and didn't leave under a cloud, because Dick Wolf has been happy to bring her back twice since.

Hope this helps!
