Answer Officially, it's that he wanted to pursue other projects (and will be, hosting the revamped Unsolved Mysteries series on Spike TV in October). L&O's schedules can be grueling, and the weather in NY is not nearly as nice to film in as in Los Angeles (and some other environs), so not too many actors last past two or three years, unless they have roots in the city.
