Law School - GPA and quality of undergrad school

Expert: A. Hall - 10/9/2008

Question
Hello,
I am interested in applying to a top 50 law school but am concerned that my 3.22 undergrad GPA may hinder me a bit. However, I did attain this GPA at a top 25 liberal arts school, which I am hoping will help. Do you know if law schools consider the quality of the undergraduate school when looking at GPA? If so, how seriously do they consider it? Also, would it help that my GPA for classes taken in my major is higher(around 3.5)?
Thanks for taking my question.

Answer
YOU ASKED: Do you know if law schools consider the quality of the undergraduate school when looking at GPA?

ANSWER: Yes, law schools consider the quality of the undergraduate school when looking at GPA.  Law schools use the LSDAS service, which multiplies your GPA by a number that represents your school's difficulty.  This score makes up 1/3 of your points as a law school applicant.  The other 2/3 is your LSAT score.

YOU ASKED: Also, would it help that my GPA for classes taken in my major is higher(around 3.5)?

ANSWER: No. My understanding is that your overall GPA is used, not your major's GPA.
