About Evelyn R. Calvoni
Expertise
I can answer questions about law school and the process of applying to law school. I recently graduated in May 2008, so it's all fresh in my mind. I can answer questions about how to apply to law school, the LSAT, getting letters of recommendation, writing your personal statement, etc. I can also answer questions about what life is like during law school and the different opportunities students should take advantage of during their law school experience, i.e., law review, networking events, moot court, clinics, internships, what classes to take, etc. I can also answer questions about what it's like to look for a job, what are good jobs to get right out of law school, and general questions about writing cover letters and resumes. I can also answer questions about judicial clerkships after law school.

Experience
I am a recent law school graduate (May 2008). I have been through the process and have taken advantage of many different opportunities throughout my three years in law school. I've done internships, a clinic, been on law review, been on moot court, and participated in several moot court competitions. I am currently clerking for a state Court of Appeals judge.

Education/Credentials
I have a BA in Political Science.

Question
I wanted to know if you can start law school during a different quarter than fall? I have had a few hiccups in my schedule that make it impossible to be ready for the fall quarter. If you know of any schools that allow starting in quarters other than fall I would greatly appreciate the guidance. Thank you in advance for your time.

Answer
Hi Mike,

I'm actually not sure of any specific school that allows students to begin in the spring.  I want to say that I've heard of a few, but I can't remember which they are.  I do think it's possible that there are some law schools that would allow you to start in the spring; however, most law schools have a very strict schedule that they follow for first-year students.  All your classes (in any law school I've heard of) are set for the first year, and so is your schedule.  You typically don't have a choice.  And they structure it so that you take certain classes in the fall, and other classes in the spring.  With that in mind, I think most law schools wouldn't allow you to start at any time other than the fall because of that schedule that they set for first-year students.  Your best bet might be to just wait to apply for the next fall semester in which you can begin.  Another option is to apply now and then ask for a deferment.  Some schools will allow you to defer one year after they've accepted you.  But if you already know you won't be able to start this fall, you should probably just wait, or find a school that would allow you to apply for the spring.  There are several books that you can buy that give you detailed information on every accredited law school in the country.  Those books might contain information that addresses your concern, i.e., they might tell you which schools allow you to start in the spring.  I would suggest going to the bookstore and getting one of those books.  I don't know of any particular books off the top of my head.  I do believe that Princeton Review publishes such a book.

I hope this helps.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Smiles,
Evelyn
