AboutEvelyn R. Calvoni Expertise I can answer questions about law school and the process of applying to law school. I recently graduated in May 2008, so it's all fresh in my mind. I can answer questions about how to apply to law school, the LSAT, getting letters of recommendation, writing your personal statement, etc. I can also answer questions about what life is like during law school and the different opportunities students should take advantage of during their law school experience, i.e., law review, networking events, moot court, clinics, internships, what classes to take, etc. I can also answer questions about what it's like to look for a job, what are good jobs to get right out of law school, and general questions about writing cover letters and resumes. I can also answer questions about judicial clerkships after law school.
Experience I am a recent law school graduate (May 2008). I have been through the process and have taken advantage of many different opportunities throughout my three years in law school. I've done internships, a clinic, been on law review, been on moot court, and participated in several moot court competitions. I am currently clerking for a state Court of Appeals judge.
Education/Credentials I have a BA in Political Science.
Question Hi, I am in my late 30's. I am finishing my specialty training as a physician. I have a medical degree, did very well on my medical boards, and have a 3.6 gpa. I also have many published papers and recently won a national scholars award. I took time off after med. school to compete as a professional athlete. My father has a very successful law practice. I am seriously considering switching careers this late to work with him. I have always wanted to go to law school, and thought I might do it for fun some day when I was in my 50's to 60's. Now I am thinking that I may want to work with my father and perhaps practice medical legal law. I dont know if I would even be competitive as an applicant. I am not even positive I want to leave medicine, but I am becoming disenchanted with it...the salary in relation to hours, etc. I grew up working in his office, so I know what it is all about. I took the LSAT many years ago and I did well, if I remember correctly, but realize I will have to take it again. I am not sure how competitive someone my age and with this background would be. I realize this whole career switch is likely foolish and I am just testing the waters at this stage.
Answer Hi Sam,
I just graduated with a gentleman who was older than you and also had been a doctor before he came to law school. So, it's definitely possible! You are as much a competitive applicant as anyone else...maybe even more so because you've proven by obtaining your medical degree that you're a dedicated, hard-working individual.
I don't think it's foolish to switch careers at this point if it's what you really want to do. I'm still considering becoming a wedding planner some day and I just graduated from law school and am studying for the bar! So, I think you're fine. I say go for it if it's what you want!
