About Long Island Gardener
Expertise
How to grow the Perfect Lawn? If you live in the Northeast/Atlantic Coast, I have intelligent answers on grass selection, fertilizers, soil care, weed control, and lawnmowers. Although I have degrees in related fields, a person's real gardening skills are learned from trial and error. More important, I am strict about not using chemicals in the garden. Organic gardening is not just earth friendly and healthier for you, your children and your pets. It's less expensive and easier. You read that right. Less expensive and easier.

Experience
Homeowner for 15 years, 30 years of gardening for personal pleasure, college credits in horticulture and botany, volunteer docent at the local botanical gardens, and a whole library of gardening and landscaping books at home some 100 years old.

Question
hello I live in Australia and I have clay soil and just read your answer to the suject what is dry molasses and where can I get it? we are on 3 acres here and im sick to death of failing I have hand planted all the grass on our property and its backbreaking work

Answer
Tell me, my friend, do you have Soil testers conveniently located in your part of the country?

It's a critical part of the prescription for improving your Lawn, see.  If you know what's in your Soil, you know what you need to add, and what you don't need to add.  Which saves time, money and aggravation.

It also helps you to resist the strong messages that beckon you to buy this that and the other thing that you don't need for your Grass and Garden.

Dirt Doctor Howard Garrett posts a whole essay on Dry Molasses:

www.dirtdoctor.com/view_question.php?id=1249

'Dry Molasses isn’t really straight Dried Molasses. It’s molasses sprayed on a grain residue carrier. It’s an excellent Carbon source that stimulates beneficial microorganisms...'

Dry Molasses is not a cure for uncooperative or poor quality Soil.  If you have a high Clay Soil, there are other solutions.  The main one being heavy amendments of Organic Matter in Compost and Manure, plus whatever else you feel like adding.  Tell me more about your Lawn, your climate and your Soil -- I would especially like to know the kind of Grass you are growing, perhaps we should switch to something less maintenance-intense.  rsvp
