Question My grass is turning brown at the root. It has looked great but I am afraid it is going to die on me again this year. We have a fescue mix and reseeded in the early spring. However, we have had a lot of rain recently and I have been cutting the grass at 3"-4". Is it dying or am I just cutting it too long. We live in Maryland near Annapolis and the house is in a very wooded area. Should I have the PH tested?
Answer Hi Linda,
If it is just turning brown at the roots, you really don't need to be concerned. Contrary to what a lot of people think, the blades of the grass aren't green from top to bottom. The bottom parts are normally brown, as they are not exposed to sunlight, and don't need the chlorophyll for photosynthesis.
Keep an eye on things. If it looks like more than just the roots are turning brown, take a few pictures and upload them for me to see what you are dealing with.
