The use of organic fertilizers is the best if you do not want any chance of harm done to kids or pets. However, these fertilizers are slightly less effective than normal compounds. And as for what Kenneth stated about weed killers and pesticides, he is right to an extent. A residue will only be left if the fertilizer is not watered in properly. And the weed killer that vigoro uses works below the surface and on top, it doesn't actually stay on the plant itself. Same with their pesticide. It will only create a residue if it is not watered in properly.

And to say use of a summer guard is unnecessary is bonkers. The level of lawn invading and lawn feeding insects is ridiculous these days. if you want a safe lawn you should always use a summer guard. Preferably Vigoro because it takes care of far more insects and is more effective than Scotts brand fertilizers.

organic fertilizer was harmful to our Lab - because he loved the smell of the chicken litter based organic fertilizer and ate some of it.  He's been throwing up and having diareah for 48 hours.  Try telling a dog that he "didn't use the product correctly".  If you have a pet that eats anything that smells good (to them), then stay away from organic fertilizer.

My dog got deathly sick from Scotts organic Choice Lawn food. Please tell me how you can stop dogs from eating the grass or rooting in the dirt? This is not safe for animals because of that and I will never use it again. I don't intend that to be nasty I just mean you cannot stop the animals from eating the grass or digging. My Vet told me actually nothing like that is good to use it can even have bacteria in it which can harm pets. Thanks Terri

Expertise

I can answer questions about most cool season lawn care issues: fertilizing, watering, grass seed selection, weed identification and eradication, managing lawns in shade, recommend horticultural practices, improving soils, and organic approaches. I can especially give advice on the use and selection of fertilizers, suggest organic lawn care approaches and propose suitable lawn care calenders. My experience is with cool season lawns, so my knowledge of warm season areas is limited. My knowledge of pesticide use is very limited.

Experience

I have been actively working with lawn care for a number of years in zone 6, including restoration, maintenance, etc
