Led Zeppelin - home made instrument

Question
i was watchind a DVD a few years back and saw Page messing around with this type of radio antenna/tower that he had sitting on an amp. i have tried looking everywhere to find out what it was, but no luck. can't remember the DVD, but the image is still pretty specific in my head. he would use his hands and move them closer, then further away, and seem to "bend" the sound that was created i'm guessing throuhg electrical current
please tell me what it is so i can sleep at night!
thanks

Answer
Hi David

Yes, the instrument is called a "theremin"; not quite a home made instrument, but rather one invented by Leon Theremin, a Russian physicist.  It did, as you guessed, use the concepts of electric current, with a performer's one hand acting as the ground, and the other moving around one of the instrument's two antennae to create various tones from the instrument.  Here's a pretty good summary of the device:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theramin

PS: It was also used by Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations".
