That sounds like The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin... if not then maybe their similar hit "Tuesday Afternoon". They have that spoken word schpiel at the end... "Breathe deep, the gathering gloom...watch lights fade from every room...". Etc.

He may be thinking of the 1967 Moody Blue's song "Nights in White Satin". The original LP version that ends in a narrative poem, with background instrumentals, which concludes with a gong.
