Legal Ethics - ethics

Expert: Paul D. Friedman, M.A., Ph.D., J.D. - 10/5/2009

Question
is there any code ethics for lawyers when they speak in the court?for example, they must not say any swear words.

Answer
Every state and the American Bar Association has a code of ethics.  Each code contains an ethical standard, including truth-telling to the Court.  Also, each state has a standard of professionalism which includes using proper language.  The judge has the discretion of holding an attorney in contempt or turning the attorney over to the bar if the judge feels the language is inappropriate.
