Legislation, Presidential & Congressional Politics - voter registration draft

Expert: Michael Troy - 10/4/2008

Question
Hi Mike, I was wondering if the rumor is true about if I am not registered to
vote, would I be exempt from a draft?

Answer
Hi Rusty,

No, the two things are not related.  Firstly, there is no draft in the US.  There has not been since President Nixon ended it in 1973.

There is, however, a draft registration required for all males age 18-25.  This was instituted by President Carter in 1980.  This registration is mandatory (punishable by a $250,000 fine and five years in jail if you fail to register) and is completely unrelated to voter registration.

I hope this helps!
- Mike
