Question explain why northern whites who opposed slavery and southern whites who supported slavery both believed they were fighting to defend liberty
Answer Hi Ursula,
Northern abolitionists were focused on the liberty of the slaves. The believed that these people were being denied their fundamental rights to control their own lives.
Southern supporters of slavery were focused on their own liberty. They held the racist view that people of African descent were not fully human. They were thought of more like farm animals. With such a mind set, supporters thought they were fighting for the liberties of slave owners to use their property as they saw fit.
I hope this helps!
- Mike
