Experience I have studied the American presidency extensively for more than thirty years. I've digested the eminent biographies of each man who has held the presidency, as well as those of several who came close. I've taught and lectured on this subject extensively.

Question Was Abraham Lincoln the first American President to be photographed? I can't find any photos of any Presidents before him.
Answer He was the first to be photographed while he was president; however, you can find photographs (or the technological equivalent) of Andrew Jackson toward the end of his life. I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen one of John Quincy Adams. If so, it would also have been from well after he left the White House.
Interesting question. Thanks!
