Answer
First the Electoral Colleges has nothing to primary elections. It has nothing to do with Gerrymandering which district lines that favor a party by State Houses after the census.

Your correct there were no political parties mentioned in the constitution. However in practice there were political parties from the start. At first it was Federalist Party {Washington & Hamilton} and Democratic-Republicans. {Jefferson and Madison} It is natural occurrence, people group up with like minded persons.

The the primary is members of the party deciding who they will run in the general election for that party, if more than one person wishes to run. It can apply to any office or any party (there have been and are now parties not just those two). The primaries are way of winning delegates to a parties convention (state or national. Prior to primaries, caucuses would decide who got delegates. (Iowa still uses them) This are party insiders meeting a deciding who the delegates  vote for. Primaries replaced this as allowed more members of the party to have input. Keep in mind that not limited to just the GOP and Democrats. Minor parties like the Libertarians, Green Party, Socialist, Communists, American Nazi, etc etc. can also have primaries but almost never do. One they have a hard time coming up with A person to run. Two, its cost money to run a primary and few parties have the money.
