Legislation, Presidential & Congressional Politics/Obama and deficit

Some people think Obama has increased the deficit. On the politifact site they claim he has actually reduced it slightly. Has Obama reduced the deficit or increased it?

The DEFICIT is less than when Obama took office - remember, that year the economy was in total collapse, and Congress adobpted the $800 billion + stimulus package without raising taxes or covering other expenditures. Whether the credit for this goes to Obama or Congress is open to debate, of course.

On the other hand, the NATIONAL DEBT has increased. Remember, even a very small deficit increases the debt - the only way to shrink the national debt is to have a surplus. People often confuse the two, which is probably what is happening here.
