Question
Hi, I have a 99 RX300 with 117k miles. I'm wondering if my tranny is working ok. In the morning, I have to drive about a mile before it shifts to overdrive and the rpms go to 4k. Also, it seems to respond slow when I come to a stop, then start out again. Are these bad signs? Toyota dealership says its ok. I've read some real bad things about these trannies. thx Cindy

Answer
it sounds like its time for a trans overhaul or replacement. does the trans have a high pitched when cold and at idle? then continue in first gear, but when the trans shifts to 2nd gear the whine goes away? if so the trans needs work. more than likely a replacement. the overdrive situation works like this. you will not get over drive (even with the button pushed) until the engine temp reaches a certain level around 105 to 125 degrees.this is for emission purposes. you may want to take it somewhere else for a second opinion. good luck cindy
