Librarians - other fields of work

Expert: Robert H. Kieserman, MBA, MLIS - 3/4/2009

Question
Do you have suggestions for other fields of work for a librarian? Library jobs in CT seem scarce. My experience has been in medical libraries and I have found it difficult to be considered for other types of library jobs.

Answer
Here are a few ideas -

work in a public library with a focus on consumer health reference - You could help customers find reliable information on healthcare issues, and do programs related to wellness and using the Internet for consumer medical information.

approach pharmaceutical companies and healthcare insurance companies to work in medical research librarianship

contact the National Library of Medicine or the National Institutes of Health to see if there are any research or reference positions

work in a patient advocacy department, found typically in larger specialty hospitals like oncology and children's hospitals - this is a relatively new service and growing in popularity, especially in large urban specialty hospitals

contact Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC - they have had some major turnover in recent months, and I believe they are currently trying to fill some positions
