Librarians - other jobs using MLIS

Expert: Robert H. Kieserman, MBA, MLIS - 4/30/2009

Question
I'm currently an elementary school library media specialist.  What other job opportunities are out there for me to explore that would use my degree and knowledge besides public (not enough money) or academic libraries?  How do I go about finding out about job postings/openings in different, but related fields?

Answer
I can direct you to two excellent job lists, if you are not already aware of them. One is LisJobs.com and the other is the ALA site that lists jobs in different categories in all parts of the country. You can also find a wonderful list of sites at the Rutgers University SCILS website. In terms of other career paths, have you considered working for the state library association or for the Department of Education in your state as a consultant, or perhaps as an employed consultant with one of the many vendors serving the elementary school library world?
