Librarians - Library science as a second career

Expert: Robert H. Kieserman, MBA, MLIS - 11/15/2007

Question
I have a BS in business from a state college and have worked out in the business arena for 19 years.  I am thinking of a career change and am interested to know if I can apply for a Master in Ed. Library Science without a teaching certificate or a bachelors in Library science?

Answer
I would not suggest that you pursue a bachelor's degree, but rather a Masters degree. Whether you need a teaching certificate to be an educational media specialist is up to your state licensing board. Some states require it, while others do not. You should contact the American Association of School Librarians (http://www.ala.org/ala/aasl/aaslindex.cfm), a division of the American Library Association, and they can direct you to the proper person in your particular state. If you want information on librarianship, you may find the resources on my website helpful (www.kiesermanconsulting.com). Let me know if you have any other questions.
