Subject: Majoring in Library Science

Question
Hi! I'm a senior in high school and am planning to attend Slippery Rock in PA.  I am also interested being a librarian, but SRU isn't accredited by the ALA.  Could I major in something else at SRU and then go somewhere else accredited for my MLS? And would it be okay if I use your answer in my graduation project paper dealing with my future career possibilities? Thank-you! Caitlin

Answer
The MLIS degree is, of course, a graduate degree. Therefore, you need to complete 4-years of college, and then apply to library school. You can really major in anything in college. However, many librarians have majored in the humanities (English, History) or the Sciences. This gives them a background to work in either public libraries or college libraries. When you are ready to choose a graduate school, you must be sure that the Library program is approved by the American Library Association. You can learn more about becoming a librarian and attending library school by going to the ALA site. Good luck.
