Subject: Thinking about getting my MLIS degree.

Question
I am a Michigan teacher who is having a hard time finding a job.  I am thinking of getting my MLIS degree.  If I concentrate on media specialist for a school will that eliminate me from working in a Public Library.  I want more choices for my next degree.
Thank you.

Answer
The answer very simply is no, getting certification as an educational media specialist will not prevent you from working in a public library. In fact, many ed media specialists actually moonlight as public library reference libarians at night and on the weekends. Your library school education will prepare you to enter any aspect of librarianship you choose to enter. Taking the extra courses to become an educational media specialist only gives you one more valuable option in addition to the regular options of going into public librarianship, academic librarianship, or special librarianship. Please write back if you have any other questions. I love being a librarian. It's a great profession!
