Question Hi. I am a 24 year old part time student & I also have a part time job who is about to get kicked off my parents Aetna HMO healthcare policy supposeably because I have reached the maximum age for coverage. I'm really concerned, I need to have insurance because I get migraines and have a back condition called scoliosis which cause me to have back pain. Is there some way that I can manage to stay on my parents policy? Or maybe branch off of my parents policy so that my dad would pay about the same rate for the same type of insurance coverage that I have under him?
Answer Hi Samantha,
Unfortunately, it's a rare thing for me to see somebody with scoliosis being accepted by an insurance carrier. Since you did not indicate what state you reside in it makes a difficult for me to point you in the right direction. At this point, I recommend you contact your state's Department of Insurance to find out if they have a risk pool plan that you can join.
I'm sorry I cannot offer you more information, but each state has different programs available and I don't think it's prudent to have you read a 50 page summary of such programs. Another option would be to see if you can get a group plan if it's offered at your work.
