Question I am 27 years old and live in PA. I am an independent contractor so no insurance is offered through my employer. I have insurance through my husband but it does not offer maternity coverage. I am 5 weeks pregnant. An insurance broker has told me that I will not be able to get insurance to cover this pregnancy. I have spoke with Alliance Health Advisors about a health savings plan as an addition to my insurance. They stated that for $80/month, they will cover 60% of unlimited dr. visits and at least 74% of hospital stays and I will be able to cancel the policy at the end of the pregnancy with no additional fees. This seems too good to be true. Is this a sensible choice in my situation? Are there other alternatives? I would most likely not qualify for programs based on financial needs.
Answer Hi Christie,
If something sounds good to be true it normally is the truth! Any reputable insurance carrier with a history of paying claims would not accept you as a member until your baby was born. A typical pregnancy can cost anywhere from $5000-$15000 if there are no complications, so how a company can make a profit from a mere $80 p/month is beyond me. You may not quality for programs based on your income, but I would encourage you to apply for Medicaid and any other local programs available through your local Health and Human Services Department.
